Aluminum Wiring Replacement & Remediation in San Diego

Aluminum branch wiring — installed in a lot of San Diego homes between 1965 and 1973 — has a well-documented fire risk. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper under load; over decades that loosens connections at outlets and switches; loose connections arc; arcs start fires. Fixing it isn't optional if you want a safe house and, increasingly, if you want homeowner's insurance.

Two ways to fix it

1. Full replacement. Rip out the aluminum, run new copper. This is the gold standard — it's a rewire, and once it's done the problem is completely gone.

2. CPSC-approved pigtail remediation. Every device (outlet, switch, junction) is connected to a short copper "pigtail" using an AlumiConn connector — the only CPSC-recognized method. The aluminum stays in the walls; the connections are safe.

Which is right for you depends on budget, timeline, and insurance requirements. We'll walk through both and tell you honestly which we'd choose for our own house.

Questions we get about this service

Will my insurance company accept AlumiConn pigtailing?
Most will — it's the CPSC-recognized remediation. Some require full replacement. We can talk to your insurer if needed.
Are 'Twister' or purple-wire-nut aluminum-to-copper connectors OK?
No. The CPSC does not recognize twist-on connectors as an approved remediation. AlumiConn (or COPALUM crimp) is the standard.
