Interior Lighting Installation

When thinking about indoor lighting, you need to think of the interior design of your home. How can you truly make your house feel like your home? In addition to making you and your family feel comfortable, the consumption of energy must also be taken into account. Lighting accounts for a significant part of all energy consumed worldwide so it’s important to pick the most energy efficient light fixtures and bulb types out there.

When working with an electric at CLD Electric, we will walk you through all the steps in deciding what fixtures are best for the inside (and outside) of your home. The first step is understanding the difference between the types of lighting available. We’ll go over 7 popular types of lighting below.

Recessed Lighting Fixtures

Recessed lighting is installed above the ceiling and lays flush with it. There is a minimum of 6 inches of clearance needed above the ceiling in order to install. Insulation is also a must to make sure condensation does not leak into the fixture.

If you’re looking for ambient, task, or accent lighting in your home, recessed lighting is the way to go. It is mostly used a the primary source of lighting and can be used with warm or cool lights.

Under-Cabinet Fixtures

Under-cabinet lighting is usually found in the kitchen underneath the cabinets. It is usually linear or puck shaped.

This is perfect for people who need extra lighting in the kitchen for preparing meals. If paired with a dimmer switch, it can also be used as ambiance lighting for when no one is using the kitchen.

Pendants

Pendant lighting is hung from the ceiling and directs the light downward. This type of lighting is found in kitchens or dining rooms to help illuminate table tops or islands. Many homeowners choose pendant fixtures to further enhance the theme of a room.

The goal of pendant lighting is usually to keep the light focused on what is in the middle of a room, whether it be Thanksgiving dinner or poker night.

Chandeliers

Perhaps the most famous of all light fixtures, the chandelier is used primarily as a focal point of a room. From grand fixtures with hundreds of pieces to more simpler models, a chandelier is often used to create a “wow” factor in a room.

Chandeliers were once very popular but have been going out of style due to maintenance and space issues.

Wall Sconces

Wall sconces are a great way to add a low cost lighting upgrade to your home. Sconces can direct light upwards and downwards and add a stylish touch to any room or hallway.

These light fixtures are often used for ambient or task lighting and can be found in a variety of different materials such as bronze, wrought iron, and gold plated. It’s a great way to add the finishing touch in a room.

Ceiling Lighting

Ceiling lighting is a fixture that is mounted directly to the ceiling. It differs from recessed lighting as it down not lay flush with the ceiling. This type of lighting usually contains a plastic or glass shade that covers the light bulb. The shade helps to filter the light to make it wider and create a greater ambiance.
